What to Expect During a Fire Risk Assessment Visit

The Risk Assessment process

A Fire Risk Assessment is a structured evaluation of your premises, the activities carried out within it, and the potential sources of fire and harm to relevant persons. The assessment identifies significant hazards, evaluates the level of risk they present, and provides proportionate recommendations to reduce both the likelihood of fire and its potential impact on occupants and property.

Documentation and information required

During our visit, the assessor will review relevant documentation, records and certification to determine whether fire safety arrangements are being effectively managed. The documentation required will vary depending on the type, size and complexity of the premises.

Examples of documentation reviewed

  • Fire alarm testing and maintenance records
  • Emergency lighting inspection and testing records
  • Fire suppression system servicing certificates (e.g. sprinkler systems)
  • Ventilation system inspection records
  • Fire extinguisher servicing records
  • Gas safety certification
  • Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR)
  • Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) records

Management and planning documentation

  • Previous Fire Risk Assessment and action plan
  • Fire strategy (where applicable), including drawings
  • Emergency evacuation plan
  • Fire drills and staff training records
  • DSEAR risk assessment and arrangements (where applicable)

A nominated responsible person should be available on the day of the visit to provide access, assist with escorting the assessor where required and answer operational questions. The duration of the assessment typically ranges from approximately 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on the size, layout and complexity of the premises. Following the visit, the assessor will provide an overview of findings and highlight any significant or urgent fire safety concerns requiring immediate attention.
